Jamal Khashoggi's wife, Hanan Elatr, who has been living in fear for her safety since her husband's murder, has been granted political asylum in the US. Mr. Khashoggi, a journalist, was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October 2018, with US intelligence asserting that Saudi Arabia was responsible for the assassination. Ms. Elatr sought asylum in the US in August 2020 due to concerns about her safety. The BBC has reviewed documents showing that she was granted indefinite asylum status on 28 November. While Ms. Elatr expressed relief and gratitude towards President Joe Biden and his administration, she sees this as just the first step in seeking justice for her husband's murder. She intends to pursue compensation from Saudi Arabia and legal action against the Israeli spyware firm NSO Group, which has been alleged to have sold its Pegasus software to authoritarian governments.
