A mysterious ex-England footballer's collection of shirts from the 1990 World Cup is being put up for sale by Hansons Auctioneers in Derbyshire. The collection consists of eight shirts gathered during England's seven matches in the tournament. England reached the semi-finals but was defeated by West Germany. One of the shirts for sale is a signed yellow shirt worn by goalkeeper Peter Shilton during the penalty defeat. The collection is expected to fetch around £300,000. The identity of the ex-England star selling the shirts has not been disclosed due to client confidentiality, but according to Charles Hanson, the owner of the auction firm, he played a vital role in the 1990 World Cup and had an impressive football career. Seven of the shirts were exchanged with opposing players during the tournament, with a guide price of £150,000 to £250,000. These shirts were originally worn by Andy Townsend from the Republic of Ireland, Johannes van't Schip from the Netherlands, Sader Eid from Egypt, Marc van der Linden from Belgium, Emmanuel Kunde from Cameroon, Klaus Augenthaler from West Germany, and Giuseppe Giannini from Italy. Shilton's shirt, signed by the entire England squad, is estimated to be worth £40,000 to £50,000. According to Mr. Hanson, the former goalkeeper gave away the shirt to the vendor in the dressing room after the painful penalty shootout defeat against West Germany. He added that this collection of retro shirts takes us back to a memorable tournament. Bids for these shirts can be submitted through private tender.
