Israeli forces have entered southern Gaza near Khan Younis, confirming reports of ground operations. Pictures on social media have also been verified, showing an Israeli tank operating near the city. The head of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Lt General Herzi Halevi, addressed troops, stating that the IDF was fighting strongly in both the north and south of Gaza. Since the week-long ceasefire ended, Israel has resumed its bombing campaign on Gaza, described by residents of Khan Younis as the heaviest wave of attacks to date. A UN official has expressed concern over the escalation of violence, describing a sense of panic in a Gaza hospital. James Elder from Unicef described the hospital as a "warzone" with children arriving with severe injuries. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza reported more than 500 people killed since the bombings resumed. Rockets have also been fired at Israel from Gaza, causing minor injuries to a man in the city of Holon. The UN estimates that 1.8 million people are internally displaced in Gaza. The IDF has been posting maps online to warn people of areas to be attacked, but Hamas has been accused of embedding its military in civilian areas, making it difficult to protect civilians. The IDF has also claimed that 500 "terror tunnel" shafts used by Hamas have been destroyed.
