The director of Gaza City's al-Shifa Hospital, Dr Mohammed Abu Salmiya, has been detained by Israeli forces for questioning. He was stopped at a checkpoint as he tried to evacuate patients to the south. The Israeli military claims that al-Shifa Hospital served as a Hamas command and control center, but Dr Abu Salmiya and Hamas deny this. In addition, heavy fire has been reported around another hospital in the north. Israeli troops have ordered the full evacuation of the Indonesian Hospital, where fighting has been ongoing. The United Nations has warned of a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and the Palestinian Red Crescent Society has reported that the evacuation process was obstructed and subjected to careful inspection at a checkpoint. Hospitals are supposed to be protected under international humanitarian law, but this protection can be lost if they are used by a party to the conflict to harm the enemy.
