The military of Israel has confirmed that Major Gal Eisenkot, the son of former army chief Gadi Eisenkot and a minister in the country's war cabinet, was killed in Gaza. The incident occurred in northern Gaza when a tunnel shaft exploded, resulting in severe injuries to Maj Eisenkot, who later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. Israeli media reports suggest that Gal Eisenkot was badly injured in the incident. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his grief, stating that he and his wife were "broken-hearted" and praised Gal Eisenkot as a "true hero." In his statement, Netanyahu reiterated Israel's commitment to continue the fight until victory, emphasizing that the sacrifices made by their heroes would not be in vain. Gadi Eisenkot, who served as Israel's chief of the general staff from 2015 to 2019, is a battle-hardened retired general and a member of Netanyahu's emergency government following Hamas' attack on Israel. The attack by Hamas in early October caused significant damage and loss of life in Israel, prompting an aggressive response from the country, including airstrikes and a ground invasion. According to Hamas officials in Gaza, the conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 17,000 people, the majority of whom are civilians, with thousands more missing under the rubble. Gadi Eisenkot was reportedly informed about his son's injuries while visiting the Israel Defense Forces' Southern Command. Various Israeli government officials and lawmakers offered their condolences to the Eisenkot family. Opposition leader Yair Lapid shared a photo of Gal and Gadi Eisenkot in military uniforms, highlighting their commitment and dedication to serving the nation. Alongside the picture, Lapid wrote a heartfelt message reflecting on the significance of the embrace between a father and son, stating that the fate of an entire nation can be represented in a single hug. The IDF also confirmed the death of another soldier, Sgt Maj Jonathan David Deitch, in southern Gaza on the same day.
