Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has proposed a plan for the future governance of Gaza following the Israel-Hamas conflict. Under the plan, there would be limited Palestinian rule in the territory, with Israel retaining overall security control. The fighting in Gaza continues, with dozens of casualties reported. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to visit the region to hold talks with Palestinian officials and Israeli leaders. The plan also involves a multi-national force overseeing the reconstruction of Gaza, with Egypt playing a role as well. However, Palestinian leaders are likely to reject the proposal, insisting on local control of Gaza. There is disagreement within Israel about the way forward, with some suggesting encouraging Palestinian citizens to leave Gaza and reestablishing Jewish settlements there. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not outlined his vision for Gaza's governance and has indicated that the conflict may last several more months. The Israeli military, according to Gallant's plan, will focus on targeted operations in the north and continue efforts in the south to locate Hamas leaders and rescue Israeli hostages. The IDF claims to have conducted strikes on terrorist infrastructure and killed militant operatives, including a senior member of Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The ongoing conflict has resulted in many casualties, and aid agencies have expressed concern about the lack of safe areas in Gaza. Since the start of Israel's retaliatory campaign, over 22,400 people have been killed in Gaza, accounting for nearly 1% of the population. The conflict began when Hamas gunmen attacked southern Israel, resulting in numerous deaths and hostages being taken.
