Satellite images suggest that extensive construction work is underway along Egypt's border with Gaza, reportedly in preparation for housing Palestinian refugees. According to unnamed Egyptian sources, the construction is being done to create an isolated buffer zone with a walled enclosure in Egypt's North Sinai province, in case Israel proceeds with its planned ground offensive in Rafah, southern Gaza. Human rights group reports indicate that seven-meter-high walls are being built in this zone. However, Egypt has publicly denied making any preparations for this. Israel's Foreign Minister has also stated that Israel has no intention of evacuating Palestinian civilians to Egypt. Egypt has consistently said it would not open its borders to refugees since the start of the Gaza war. The satellite imagery, released by Maxar Technologies, suggests that Egypt has taken precautionary measures due to the impending offensive. Construction vehicles and walls can be seen in the images, indicating ongoing work. Videos and photos from the Sinai Foundation for Human Rights also show construction taking place. The Wall Street Journal has confirmed the report, stating that the enclosure being constructed could accommodate more than 100,000 people. UN officials are concerned about a potential mass evacuation, calling it a disaster for both Palestinians and Egypt. Expulsion into Egypt would touch on deep Palestinian fears and could be seen as another forced expulsion. Israel claims that its actions in Gaza are in response to a surprise attack by Hamas in October.
