The UK Foreign Secretary, Lord Cameron, has stated his desire for a "sustainable ceasefire" in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza. Lord Cameron also expressed concern over the high number of civilian casualties in Gaza, with over 18,000 people, including many children, being killed according to the Hamas-run health ministry. This marks a shift in tone from the UK Government, although Lord Cameron's article falls short of calling for an immediate ceasefire. In a joint article with Germany's Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, Lord Cameron emphasized the need for a long-term, lasting peace rather than a temporary end to fighting. The UK and Germany recently abstained from a United Nations resolution that called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, explaining that they do not believe a general and immediate ceasefire would be sustainable. Instead, they are advocating for more humanitarian pauses to provide aid and facilitate the release of hostages. Lord Cameron's comments echo the sentiments expressed by Rishi Sunak, who emphasized the importance of a sustainable ceasefire that requires Hamas to stop launching rockets into Israel and release all hostages. The offensive in Gaza, which was triggered by Hamas's attack on Israel, has caused widespread devastation in the region. The UK and Germany foreign ministers also called for Israel to do more to distinguish between terrorists and civilians and stressed the urgency of delivering aid to alleviate the humanitarian crisis. Israel, including its main ally the US, has faced increasing international pressure and criticism for its failure to minimize civilian casualties. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the military pressure on Saturday, stating that it was essential for the return of hostages and victory in the conflict.
