The Israeli military has confirmed the death of a soldier who was abducted by Hamas and held in Gaza following a large-scale attack on Israel on October 7. The soldier, identified as 19-year-old Corporal Noa Marciano, was among approximately 240 hostages taken by Hamas gunmen during the attack, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have informed Cpl Marciano's family about her death. The IDF criticized Hamas for releasing a video featuring Cpl Marciano, referring to it as "psychological terrorism." Her exact location within Gaza had been unknown. Hamas claimed that she was killed in an Israeli airstrike on November 9, but this could not be independently verified. Since the attack on October 7, Israel has declared war on Hamas, a group considered a terrorist organization by several Western governments, including the UK. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 11,000 people in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, while 46 Israeli soldiers have been killed inside Gaza during the same period, according to the IDF. Throughout the conflict, Hamas has released four hostages, and the IDF has rescued one.
