Idris Elba, the London-born actor, is urging the government to take decisive action on knife crime, accusing politicians of neglecting this issue. He is particularly calling for the fast-tracked implementation of a law that would ban the sale of zombie knives and machetes. Elba, known for his roles in Luther and Thor, believes that it is essential to address the alarming loss of young lives to violent crimes. As part of his Don't Stop Your Future campaign, Elba is organizing an event in London's Parliament Square where clothes representing the victims of knife crime will be displayed. The aim is to visually demonstrate the devastating impact of knife crime to MPs returning from the Christmas break. One outfit on display is donated by Yemi Hughes, whose son Andre Aderemi was fatally stabbed in 2016. Hughes emphasizes the frustration of families who have lost loved ones to knife crime and feel that their voices have not been heard. They advocate for creating safer communities for young people and addressing the root causes of youth violence. Elba is also using his music to support his campaign, with the upcoming release of a single titled Knives Down, which expresses his frustration with the government's perceived inaction on knife crime. Although primarily recognized as an actor, Elba has a musical background and has collaborated with notable artists such as Jay-Z and James Blake. The most recent police data from July 2022 to June 2023 reveals that approximately 247 individuals lost their lives due to knife crime in England and Wales. Unfortunately, these figures do not include the deaths of teenagers like Alfie Lewis or Harry Pitman, who were both victims of fatal stabbings in late 2023. Elba's campaign is also calling for an immediate ban on zombie knives and machetes. Zombie knives are classified as weapons with cutting edges, serrated edges, and imagery or wording evoking violence. While they were added to the list of banned offensive weapons in 2016, Labour has highlighted a loophole that still allows the sale of these weapons online. In August 2023, Rishi Sunak announced plans to ban more weapons and provide additional powers to the police for seizing machetes and zombie knives. However, the timing for the implementation of the new law remains uncertain. Patrick Green from the Ben Kinsella Trust underscores the need for urgent action, emphasizing that the promised legislation to ban these weapons has been delayed for four months. He questions why the government is not prioritizing a ban when these knives are being used to take the lives of children.
