The shooting at Charles University's arts faculty building in Prague lasted for 21 minutes, but it is now understood that it was not the first incident involving the shooter. Prior to the university attack, David Kozak had killed his father earlier in the day, and he is also suspected of being responsible for the murder of a father and his two-month-old daughter in a forest on the outskirts of Prague a week earlier. The forest murders had shocked the country, and although Kozak's name was on a list of suspects, the police had not yet found him. The police had been working around the clock to find the shooter and were days away from uncovering him in the forest when the university shooting occurred. Ballistics tests are being conducted to confirm if Kozak was the killer, and if so, he would have left a trail of 17 victims in just one week. The police have faced criticism for their handling of the university attack, but they claim that they had been fully focused on the forest murders and could not have predicted what was to come. According to the Interior Minister, there is no clear reason as to why Kozak committed such terrible acts. The police were first alerted to the shooter's actions when a woman called to report that her friend had sent her a text indicating he was going to take his own life. Four minutes after receiving this information, the police entered a house in Hostoun and discovered the body of Kozak's father. They also found a potential bomb in the house. A nationwide search was then launched for Kozak, and the Prague police were asked to search for him at the faculty of arts. However, due to confusion, the police were mistakenly sent to a different location before finally arriving at the correct building and evacuating it. The shooting began shortly after their arrival. The police footage from body cameras shows armed officers searching the building, treating victims, and ensuring the safety of the students. The attacker ended his own life on the roof of the building when he saw the police approaching. In total, 14 people were killed in the attack, with 13 dying at the scene and another succumbing to injuries later in the hospital. 25 others were injured, with some trying to escape the building and suffering injuries in the process.
