An elderly married couple from Penmaenmawr, Conwy county, took their own lives because they couldn't bear to be apart after 64 years of marriage. Ivor Williams, 92, and Laura Williams, 87, overdosed on prescription medication at their home on February 4. They both passed away in the hospital shortly after. Their son, Peter, revealed that his parents frequently discussed wanting to die together and couldn't imagine living without each other. The couple had led a fulfilling life, including living in Germany for a period of time. They enjoyed activities such as mountain climbing and cycling, and Laura Williams even represented Wales in both 10 pin and crown green bowling. However, Laura had suffered a major stroke in 2021 that caused a decrease in her mobility. Despite attempts at physiotherapy, she was unable to regain the use of her left arm. Ivor's independence was also limited, and they relied heavily on their family and caregivers. Peter shared that his parents felt embarrassed about their dependence and had even reached out to Dignitas, the assisted dying association in Switzerland. They had also put do not resuscitate orders in place. Early on February 5, Peter discovered his parents unconscious in their living room. A note thanking their family for their care was found alongside them. The couple was then taken to the hospital, but Laura passed away three days later, followed by Ivor on February 14. The assistant coroner for north Wales, east and central, Kate Robertson, determined that it was a joint decision by the couple to end their lives through intentional medication overdose. She concluded the inquest by highlighting the couple's profound gratitude for the love and support of their family.
