Due to a shortage of gas to power electricity generation, many parts of Ghana are currently experiencing power outages. The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has reported a supply gap of 550MW at peak time at the Tema power plant near the capital, Accra. The outage began on Thursday evening and has been exacerbated by the country's economic crisis. A recent study highlighted the unhealthy state of the country's energy provision and warned of a potential power crisis. The issue has been further worsened by financial difficulties and disputes over unpaid debts owed to independent power producers. GRIDCo has announced that electricity supply to certain areas will be reduced due to limited gas supply to the power plant, and apologized for any inconvenience caused. It is currently unclear what has caused the gas supply problem or when normal supplies will resume. Ghana has been grappling with power shortages for several years, often referred to as "dumsor" in the local language, with electricity primarily sourced from hydro and thermal sources that are not adequately maintained.
