Sara Al-Saqqa, Gaza's first female surgeon, had dreams of improving healthcare and opening her own clinic after graduating in August. However, her priorities quickly changed when the conflict between Hamas and Israel erupted and she was called in to work at Al-Shifa, Gaza's largest hospital. Overwhelmed by the sheer number of injured patients pouring in, Sara and her colleagues worked tirelessly for over a month without a break. The hospital struggled to get supplies and Sara had to make difficult decisions about which patients to prioritize. Despite the challenging conditions, Sara successfully delivered a baby during the conflict. She also experienced the anguish of not being able to contact her family during the communications blackout. Eventually, Sara evacuated to Rafah with her family, but they faced extreme hardships, including a lack of food and water. Sara continues to use her medical skills to help others in need, but worries about the uncertain future for herself and her family.
