The staff of the Eiffel Tower in Paris went on strike, leading to the closure of the iconic landmark. The strike was organized by France's CGT union, who claimed that the Tower's management was not satisfactory. The date of the strike, 27 December, held significance as it marked the centenary of Gustave Eiffel's death, the creator of the tower. Eiffel, a renowned French engineer, passed away in 1923 at the age of 91. The Eiffel Tower, also known as the Iron Lady, attracts millions of tourists each year. The strike did not affect the surrounding esplanade, but visitors with electronic tickets were advised to check their email for updates. The CGT union criticized the tower's operator, SETE, stating that its economic model was unsustainable and underestimated the number of visitors and maintenance costs. The top floor of the Eiffel Tower is scheduled to close next month for an annual renovation. Despite the strike, a sound and light concert was held as a tribute to Gustave Eiffel. French President Emmanuel Macron paid his respects to the engineer in a social media post. Gustave Eiffel gained fame through his work on bridges, viaducts, and the Statue of Liberty, but his most renowned achievement was the Eiffel Tower. Built in just over two years, the tower became an emblem of France's modern industrial prowess and a symbol of Paris.
