On Thursday, a judge will consider allegations of misconduct against Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who is leading the election-subversion case against Donald Trump in Georgia. One of Trump's co-defendants has accused Willis of having an inappropriate relationship with a top attorney she hired. Judge Scott McAfee has stated that he may disqualify Willis from the case if there is evidence to support the claims. While Willis has admitted to the relationship, she denies that it was unethical. She was the first female district attorney in Fulton County and charged Trump and 18 others with conspiring to overturn his loss to Joe Biden in the 2020 election in Georgia. Trump himself faces 13 felony charges related to pressuring Georgia officials and a fraudulent scheme to certify his victory. However, the high-profile case has become tangled in allegations of wrongdoing against Willis. Co-defendant Michael Roman has filed a motion to dismiss his charges and remove her from the case, alleging that she benefited personally from her relationship with lead prosecutor Nathan Wade. Roman claims that Wade was overpaid for his role and that the two took luxury holidays together, funded by Wade. Willis has acknowledged a "personal relationship" with Wade but denies that it affected the election case. The hearing scheduled for Thursday and Friday will focus on the timing and status of their relationship, as well as any potential financial conflict of interest. The judge has not yet decided whether Willis and Wade will testify. Legal experts suggest that while their romantic relationship was unwise, it is unlikely to overturn the case. If Willis is disqualified, another prosecutor from either the Fulton County District Attorney's Office or the Georgia Attorney General's Office would take over. The threshold to successfully remove Willis and her office from the case due to a conflict of interest is high. However, if she is removed, it could have significant implications for the prosecution.
