The European Union has accused X, formerly known as Twitter, of violating its regulations relating to countering illegal content and disinformation. Thierry Breton, the digital commissioner, outlined the alleged violations in a post on X's platform. The social media company, owned by Elon Musk, is also suspected of failing to meet its obligations regarding transparency. X has stated that it is cooperating with the regulatory process and emphasized the importance of maintaining a politically impartial and lawful procedure. The company has reiterated its commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all users, while safeguarding freedom of expression. In October, the EU began investigating X for potential dissemination of terrorist and violent content, as well as hate speech, following an attack by Hamas on Israel. At the time, X stated that it had already removed numerous Hamas-associated accounts from its platform. This investigation marks the first application of the EU's new tech regulations. Under the Digital Services Act (DSA), implemented in August, major tech companies operating within the EU face enhanced obligations to protect users, with violations potentially resulting in substantial fines or service suspensions.
