Emma Stone has defended the graphic sex scenes in Yorgos Lanthimos's film Poor Things, stating that they accurately represent her character's experiences. In the movie, Stone plays Bella, a woman who is brought back to life using the brain of her unborn child by an unconventional scientist. Throughout the film, viewers witness Bella's journey of rediscovery and her sexual awakening. Stone explained on Radio 4's Front Row that Bella is portrayed as being completely liberated and unashamed of her body. The film, which is expected to receive nominations at the Oscars and Baftas, has received attention for its nudity and sex scenes. Stone emphasized that these scenes are an integral part of Bella's growth, just like other aspects of her journey such as food, philosophy, travel, and dance. She believes that shying away from these scenes would be a disservice to Bella's character and an inaccurate representation of her development. Lanthimos, the director of the film, stated that Poor Things allows for a woman to explore the world on her own terms, without societal restrictions. The film, based on Alasdair Gray's book of the same name, has already received acclaim and awards, including the top prize at the Venice Film Festival. Stone herself won the Golden Globe for best musical or comedy actress, while the film was named best musical or comedy film at the same event.
