Elon Musk, the tech billionaire, has visited the Auschwitz death camp after facing criticism for his handling of antisemitic posts on X (formerly known as Twitter). Leaders in the Jewish community had called for Musk to visit Auschwitz, one of the most significant sites of the Holocaust, in order to gain a deeper understanding of the atrocities that occurred there. Musk will also be speaking about online antisemitism at a conference hosted by the European Jewish Association (EJA). During World War Two, Nazi Germany killed over 1.1 million people at the Auschwitz death camp, with nearly one million of them being Jews, including over 200,000 children and young people. Musk has been facing backlash for endorsing an antisemitic conspiracy theory and has since apologized for his actions. As a result, major companies such as Apple, Disney, and IBM temporarily paused their ads on X. Musk accused these advertisers of trying to blackmail him with money and expressed his disdain for their actions using explicit language. In November, he faced accusations of antisemitism for agreeing with a post that falsely claimed Jewish communities promote hatred against white people. The White House condemned his post immediately, leading Musk to admit that endorsing it was a mistake. Recently, Musk visited the Kfar Aza kibbutz in Israel, which had been targeted by Hamas in October, resulting in numerous casualties. Currently, he is in Krakow, Poland, attending a meeting with senior political figures to discuss ways to address the rise in antisemitism in Europe. The EJA stated that antisemitism in Europe has been escalating since the war in Gaza. X has faced criticism from the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum in the past. In August, the museum called out X for initially failing to remove a post denying the Holocaust, which violated the platform's policies. X claimed it was a mistake during the initial review process and removed the post after escalating the issue. The museum spokesperson highlighted the importance of effective moderation in combating antisemitism but emphasized that X had a problem with the quality of moderating and responding to reports. Despite the criticism, Musk has defended his record in combating online hate. He argued that accusations of antisemitism against him were baseless and that his life story demonstrates his support for the Jewish community. He even threatened to sue the Anti-Defamation League over their claims that problematic and racist speech had increased on X since he took over. X is also currently involved in a lawsuit against Media Matters, a non-profit organization, for accusing the platform of allowing antisemitic posts alongside advertisements. X claims that Media Matters used manipulated data in an attempt to destroy the platform.
