Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur, has announced that his social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) will introduce two new levels of premium subscriptions. In a post on X, Musk stated that one subscription option will offer all features at a lower cost but will still include ads. The second option, which is more expensive, will provide users with an ad-free experience. The introduction of these subscriptions comes as X recently began charging new users in New Zealand and the Philippines $1 to access the platform. However, Musk did not provide any further details about the subscription plans. In a bid to combat bots and fake accounts, Musk has long proposed charging for the service, and since assuming control of the company in October 2020, he has attempted to entice users to pay for an enhanced service, now referred to as X Premium, while also trying to attract advertisers by offering discounts. Some users have already opted to pay $8 per month for the blue check subscription service. Moreover, X's "Not A Bot" subscription method aims to reduce spam, manipulation, and bot activity on the platform. However, Musk's swift changes, including extensive layoffs and disbanding content moderation teams, have resulted in advertisers discontinuing their ads on the platform. Musk has acknowledged the adverse impact on revenue and has attributed it to pressure from activists.
