Elon Musk has strongly criticized advertisers that have left X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. Speaking at an event in New York, Musk accused these companies of attempting to blackmail him. Musk used explicit language, telling the advertisers to "go [expletive] yourself." Several advertisers have abandoned X due to concerns of antisemitism, including a post made by Musk himself. Musk apologized for the post, calling it the "dumbest" thing he has ever shared online. However, he caused controversy when asked about the advertising boycott by companies such as Disney, Apple, and Comcast. Musk stated that he did not want these advertisers and used explicit language again, targeting Disney CEO Bob Iger in particular. Linda Yaccarino, X's CEO, who is responsible for attracting advertisers back to the platform, was also present at the event. Musk warned that the boycott could lead to the demise of X, stating that it would be well-documented and blamed on the advertisers. Musk is currently in Israel, and his visit follows his previous support for an antisemitic conspiracy theory. It is important to note that the boycott is not solely due to this tweet, as many advertisers had already been choosing to allocate their advertising budgets elsewhere. Three months ago, Musk acknowledged a 50% decrease in ad revenue on X. The company has filed a lawsuit against liberal pressure group Media Matters, claiming that their report misrepresents the true user experience on X and aims to undermine freedom of speech. It remains uncertain if Musk's comments will persuade advertisers to return. X heavily relies on their financial support, but the exact percentage of revenue generated from ads is unclear due to the company no longer publishing quarterly reports since Musk took over. Prior to his involvement, advertising accounted for about 90% of Twitter's revenue.
