Elizabeth Magill, the President of the University of Pennsylvania, has resigned following backlash over her comments about antisemitism on campus. During a Congressional hearing, Magill refused to confirm whether students advocating for the genocide of Jews would face punishment. After facing days of calls for her resignation, Magill chose to step down. She will continue in her post until a replacement is appointed. Magill made these controversial remarks at a House of Representatives committee, along with the presidents of Harvard and MIT. They were asked if calling for the genocide of Jews violated their respective universities' rules on bullying and harassment, but instead of condemning such actions outright, they claimed the context would matter. Magill later issued an apology for her testimony. The hearing took place amidst widespread campus protests related to the Israel-Gaza conflict and a spike in antisemitic incidents. The criticism received by Magill, including from the White House, led to the university losing a $100m donation. In her statement confirming her resignation, Magill expressed her gratitude for serving as President and working towards advancing the university's missions. The University of Pennsylvania, also known as UPenn, is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the US and a part of the Ivy League.
