Ecuador's Notorious Gang Leader 'Fito' mysteriously disappears from prison

A prominent gang leader named Adolfo Macías Villamar, also known as "Fito," has mysteriously disappeared from his cell in Ecuador's maximum-security prison. Fito is the head of a powerful gang called Los Choneros, which is believed to be responsible for violent prison riots in recent months. His absence was noticed by the authorities on Sunday, and despite an extensive search, he has not been found within the prison wing. Fito is known for his criminal activities, including his alleged involvement in the assassination of a presidential candidate and the release of a music video that glorifies his illicit exploits, which was apparently filmed inside the prison. The recording of this video suggests a breach of the ban on electronic devices in the jail. It remains unclear whether Fito has managed to leave the prison compound or if he is hiding somewhere within. The police are conducting a search of La Regional prison in Guayaquil, where he was held. Fito has a history of escapes, having broken out of the prison compound in 2013 but was recaptured four months later. Los Choneros primarily engage in drug trafficking and extortion and have established connections with Mexico's Sinaloa cartel.
