Ana Ofelia Murguía, the Mexican actress known for voicing Mama Coco in the award-winning film Coco, has passed away at the age of 90. She played a crucial role in the movie, which follows a young Mexican boy who enters the Land of the Dead while pursuing his dreams of becoming a musician. Coco explores themes of family, the Day of the Dead, and the rich culture of Mexico. The National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature of Mexico acknowledged Murguía's significant contributions to the performing arts in the country, stating that her career was vital. One of the most memorable scenes in the film is when Mama Coco and her great-grandson Miguel sing "Remember Me" together. The film is set during the Day of the Dead festival, celebrated annually in various South American countries, including Mexico, to honor and remember loved ones who have passed away. Murguía, who was born in Mexico in 1933, received a lifetime achievement award, the Golden Ariel, in 2011 for her outstanding career in stage, film, and television. She was also a three-time winner of the best supporting actress award at the Ariel awards. Coco's producer, Lee Unkrich, expressed his gratitude to Mexico for its vibrant culture and traditions, stating that the film aimed to provide representation and inclusivity to children around the world.
