Convicted sex offender Gary Glitter, also known as Paul Gadd, has been denied parole by the Parole Board. Glitter was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2015 for sexually abusing three schoolgirls between 1975 and 1980. Although he was released in February last year, he was returned to prison six weeks later for violating the terms of his release. The Parole Board made the decision to keep Glitter behind bars after a closed-door hearing last month. The board concluded that releasing Glitter at this time would pose a risk to public safety and that he should remain in custody to address the risk he poses. A previous request for the hearing to be held in public was rejected. Glitter has a history of child abuse convictions dating back to the late 1990s, including possessing child abuse images and abusing two girls in Vietnam in 2006. His crimes came to light during Operation Yewtree, launched after the Jimmy Savile scandal.
