Did Iran provide assistance in plotting an attack against Israel?

The recent deadly assault by Hamas on Israeli communities near the Gaza Strip has raised questions about the involvement of Iran, Israel's arch-enemy. Unnamed members of Hamas and Hezbollah have stated that Iran gave the go-ahead for the attack a week prior, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. If it is discovered that Iran was behind the attacks, it could escalate the conflict into a regional confrontation. Iran's leaders have denied any involvement, claiming that the accusations are politically motivated and that they do not intervene in the decision-making of other countries. However, Hamas spokesperson Ghazi Hamad has stated that the group had direct support from Iran for the attack. While the US has not seen evidence of Iran's involvement, Secretary of State Antony Blinken acknowledged their long-standing relationship with Hamas. Iran has been a major sponsor of Hamas for many years, providing financial assistance and weaponry. Israel has been trying to disrupt Iran's supply routes to Gaza, and as one of their most determined adversaries, Iran has a vested interest in seeing Israel suffer. Former Mossad senior officer Haim Tomer believes that Iran is likely involved but finds it unlikely that they ordered the attack themselves. Despite Iran's support, Hamas made the decision independently based on their own interests. The Hamas operation has prompted Israeli officials to consider the possibility of increased overt involvement from Iran, as their Lebanese ally Hezbollah has already carried out attacks on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
