A severe cold wave has struck parts of northern India, bringing extremely low temperatures and a thick layer of fog. Indian-administered Kashmir has seen temperatures drop below -5C (23F), causing water bodies such as the famous Dal Lake to partially freeze. This has made it difficult for boatmen to transport passengers and tourists. Additionally, frozen water pipelines and disrupted road transport have hindered access to daily necessities in the region. Train schedules have also been affected, impacting the travel plans of millions of passengers who rely on the Indian Railways. Delhi, the capital city, has also experienced freezing temperatures, as low as 7C. Homeless people in the city have been particularly affected by the cold wave, as they often sleep on pavements. The cold weather is also exacerbating health issues, especially in Delhi, where severe pollution levels are already present during winter. Due to foggy conditions, the weather department has advised caution while driving, recommending the use of fog lights for better visibility. They have also urged people to stay indoors unless necessary and to cover their faces when outside.
