The Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland, established in 1995, aims to bring together young musicians from Catholic and Protestant backgrounds in Northern Ireland through music. The orchestra, consisting of 140 members, combines Ulster-Scots culture with Irish traditional instruments, as well as performing popular songs. It has helped forge diverse friendships among its members and exposed them to different types of music. The orchestra's founder, Sharon Treacy-Dunne, believes that music has played a crucial role in bridging divides in Northern Ireland. The orchestra's work culminates in the peace proms, an annual tour involving 35,000 children from schools all over the island. The orchestra has also given young musicians the opportunity to perform internationally, including at New York's Carnegie Hall. Despite the ongoing political disagreements in Northern Ireland, the orchestra serves as a positive example of how music can connect people from all backgrounds. Cara, a member of the orchestra, believes that showcasing its impact on the world stage is vital in countering negative narratives about Northern Ireland. She describes performing with the orchestra as an uplifting experience.
