Gayle Redman, a runner with a stoma, had to withdraw from the New York City Marathon because her supplies vest did not meet the rules set by the police, according to New York Road Runners. However, the organisers of the Chicago Marathon have informed her that her stoma and water supplies would be allowed if she secured a place. Gayle, a GP from Flint, expressed her delight at the news but called for accessibility to be improved in all races. Gayle has a stoma due to surgeries for endometriosis, which requires her to self-catheterise six times a day. A stoma is a connection to the digestive or urinary system that diverts waste into a bag. Gayle believes that race organizers should be more accommodating because everyone's stoma is different. She believes it should not be so difficult to ensure accessibility and promote the use of reusable kit. Gayle reached out to the Chicago Marathon organizers and was thrilled to hear that her supplies would be allowed if she obtained a place, with her kit being checked and labeled as excluded. She is relieved to have this reassurance and looks forward to participating in the race. Gayle also expressed concerns that other runners might compromise their health and safety if they are not allowed to use their supply vests, as they may not want to lose their place in the race. The Bank of America Chicago Marathon assured Gayle that she does not need to register as part of the Para Athletics Program, and if she enters through the non-guaranteed drawing, she just needs to provide a photo of her hydration pack and bring it to the Expo to be labeled as an exception to the policy. The Chicago Marathon organizers emphasized that the safety and security of the runners is their top priority and exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis for unique medical requirements. If Gayle decides to participate in 2024, the organizers have promised to work with her.
