A 22-year-old Canadian man named Nathaniel Veltman has been found guilty of murder in the 2021 killings of a Muslim family in London, Ontario. Veltman deliberately drove his truck into the family while they were walking together, resulting in the deaths of four family members. The jury did not specify whether Veltman's actions were motivated by terrorism. This trial marked the first time Canada's terrorism laws were tested before a jury in a first-degree murder case. Under Canadian law, jury deliberations are confidential, and they were not required to indicate if they believed the defendant was driven by terrorism. After less than six hours of deliberation, the 12-person jury delivered the guilty verdict. The attack claimed the lives of Salman Afzaal, 46, his wife Madiha Salman, 44, their 15-year-old daughter Yumna Afzaal, and Mr. Afzaal's mother Talat Afzaal, 74. Their nine-year-old son sustained serious injuries but survived. The courtroom was packed with members of London's Muslim community and friends of the Afzaal family, who were visibly emotional upon hearing the guilty verdict. Further details will be updated as this breaking news story develops.
