An ongoing investigation into the storming of Brazil's Congress by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro in 2023 has led to him being given 24 hours to surrender his passport. The order was authorized by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, and Mr. Bolsonaro's lawyer stated that he would comply. At the time of the attack on Congress, the ex-leader was in the US. He has previously claimed that he was the target of a legal witch hunt. In March 2023, he returned to Brazil and is now facing multiple investigations. In June, he was banned from running for office for eight years due to his unfounded doubts about Brazil's electronic voting system. The investigation into the events of January 8, 2023, when his supporters stormed Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace in Brasília, has garnered significant attention. The federal police in Brazil carried out an operation targeting a criminal organization involved in the attempted coup. Several premises were searched, and four arrest warrants were executed, but the names of those detained were not disclosed. Reports suggest that two of Mr. Bolsonaro's former advisers, Filipe Martins and Marcelo Câmara, are among those detained. While more than 1,400 people have been charged in connection with the riots in the past year, only a few dozen have been convicted thus far.
