Brazil experienced its highest-ever recorded temperature of 44.8C (112.6F) as the country endures a scorching heatwave. This record-breaking temperature was reached in the town of Araçuaí in the state of Minas Gerais, southeast Brazil. The extreme heat has been linked to the El Niño phenomenon and climate change. However, forecasters predict that the high temperatures will ease in the coming week. The National Institute of Meteorology stated that only three state capitals would see temperatures near 40C. This unprecedented heat has prompted red alerts across the nation, resulting in a surge in energy consumption as people attempt to keep cool. The heatwave also led to the cancellation of one of Taylor Swift's concerts in Rio de Janeiro after a fan fell ill and died prior to the show. Studies have shown that Brazil has experienced above-average temperatures from July to October. The frequency and intensity of extreme weather events are expected to increase due to climate change and the release of greenhouse gases. Additionally, the current El Niño weather phase is contributing to rising global temperatures.
