A Sheffield Wednesday fan has received a suspended prison sentence of 12 weeks after mocking the death of Bradley Lowery, a six-year-old boy who died of cancer in 2017. Dale Houghton, 32, from Rotherham, was seen laughing while holding up an image of Bradley at a match against Sunderland, the team Bradley supported. Houghton admitted to a public order offence and has been banned from attending any football match for five years. His actions have been described as disgraceful and he pleaded guilty to causing harassment, alarm, or distress. The incident occurred during a match at Hillsborough stadium on 29 September. Houghton later described his behavior as enjoyable banter. He has been ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and was given a suspended sentence by District Judge Marcus Waite, who criticized his reckless and foolish actions for causing further trauma to the grieving family. Bradley was diagnosed with cancer at a young age and became a mascot for Sunderland, becoming close with his hero, Jermain Defoe. Bradley's mother, Gemma Lowery, expressed her distress in court, stating that Houghton's behavior was disrespectful to Bradley and caused emotional turmoil to other children. Houghton's defense lawyer acknowledged the outrageous and deplorable nature of his client's behavior and emphasized his remorse and desire to apologize to Bradley's family and the public. Houghton has faced significant repercussions as a result of his actions, losing his job and experiencing strain in his personal relationships. Sheffield Wednesday has condemned his behavior, stating that such actions have no place at the stadium. Despite this incident, Sheffield Wednesday supporters have raised nearly £30,000 for the Bradley Lowery Foundation recently, highlighting the community values of the club.
