Boris Akunin, a popular novelist in Russia, has been designated a foreign agent by the country's justice ministry. This decision was made due to his opposition to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Akunin, known for his criticism of President Vladimir Putin, had his detective novels banned by the authorities prior to the war. The ministry accused him of spreading false information about Russia and its army, as well as helping raise funds for the Ukrainian military. Akunin, who currently resides in London, referred to the justice ministry's announcement as being declared a terrorist by terrorists. The designation as a foreign agent requires individuals to identify themselves as such on social media and publications, and also imposes financial reporting obligations. Many Russian cultural figures have left the country since the military campaign in Ukraine began, while those remaining face strict censorship laws.
