Panic is reportedly spreading throughout Paris and other cities in France due to a surge in bedbug infestations. While experts have noted an upward trend over the past few years, concerns about bedbugs are also emerging in the UK. Bedbugs are small insects, typically measuring about 5mm in length and oval-shaped. They have six legs and can vary in color from dark yellow to red or brown. Although there are around 90 species of bedbugs worldwide, the common bedbug (cimex lectularius) is the most successful at adapting to human environments, according to the British Pest Control Association. Contrary to their name, bedbugs can be found in various places besides mattresses. They can hide in clothing, furniture, bed frames, and even behind loose wallpaper. The primary indicator of a bedbug presence is bites, which are often raised and itchy. Bedbug bites usually appear in a line or grouped together. The appearance of the bites can differ depending on the color of the skin. On white skin, the bites typically look red, while on black or brown skin, they may appear purple and are harder to detect. Other signs to watch out for include blood stains on bedding (indicating squashed bugs) and small brown spots on bedding or furniture, which could indicate their feces. Natalie Bungay of the British Pest Control Association emphasized the importance of checking for bedbugs when traveling and stated that prevention is always better than cure. Bungay advised checking all items when staying in areas experiencing bedbug outbreaks, including suitcases, which are often placed on beds. While bedbug bites can be uncomfortable, they are not typically dangerous. They may cause intense itching and some swelling, but usually resolve on their own within a week or can be treated using basic measures. These measures may include using antihistamines for itch relief or applying a mild steroid cream like hydrocortisone. Although rare, severe allergic reactions called anaphylaxis can occur. Seek medical attention from a general practitioner if the bites remain painful, swollen, or itchy despite trying over-the-counter treatments, or if the pain and swelling spread beyond the bite area. Taking certain precautions can be challenging, but there are steps that can be taken to prevent bedbug infestations. These measures include avoiding clutter around beds and inspecting second-hand furniture thoroughly before bringing it indoors. Bungay stressed the importance of not feeling ashamed about having bedbugs in the home and recommended calling in a professional pest controller. She described bedbugs as a "public health pest," primarily due to their psychological impact. While bedbugs are not known to transmit diseases, the psychological effects of having them in one's home are significant. They feed on human blood, just like us.
