Barry Humphries, the man behind the iconic character Dame Edna Everage, was honored at a state memorial at the Sydney Opera House. The 89-year-old entertainer passed away in April due to complications from hip surgery. Humphries was known worldwide for his talent as a storyteller and comedian, building a remarkable career that spanned over seven decades. Many notable personalities, including King Charles, Sir Elton John, and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, sent tributes to celebrate his life. King Charles described Humphries as someone whose wit could make anyone laugh, while also evoking a sense of both fear and fun. Albanese referred to the performer as a comedy giant, and Sir Elton remembered him as a great friend. Fans of Humphries also gathered to pay their respects, describing how they saw aspects of themselves in his characters. Humphries invented his fictional personas from an early age and gained international recognition after moving to London in 1959. His caricatures, often playing on Australian stereotypes, became beloved by many. Dame Edna Everage, with her distinctive appearance and catchphrase, "Hello possums!", was particularly adored. Aside from his comedy career, Humphries also worked as a writer, painter, and scholar. Despite his achievements, he faced controversy in his later years due to his comments about various subjects. Humphries was survived by his wife Lizzie Spender and four children.
