England enforces ban on single-use plastic cutlery

Starting from Sunday, England will enforce a ban on certain single-use plastic items in an effort to combat litter and protect the environment. Plastic cutlery, balloon sticks, and polystyrene cups will no longer be provided by shops and hospitality businesses. This move comes as part of a broader objective to eliminate avoidable plastic waste by 2042. The ban will be overseen by local trading standards officials, but concerns have been raised about businesses and customers being unaware of the change. Some critics argue that the government should implement more comprehensive restrictions on plastic products and focus on reducing plastic production. Nevertheless, the government believes these measures will help reduce litter and plastic pollution, safeguarding the streets and wildlife from harm. Wales and Scotland have already implemented similar policies, while councils have cautioned that more needs to be done.
