An Australian farmer named Colin Deveraux survived a crocodile attack by biting the animal back. Deveraux, a cattle producer, spent a month in the hospital after being bitten by a 3.2m saltwater crocodile while he was in the Northern Territory. He recounted the incident, stating that he bit the crocodile's eyelid in an effort to save himself. The attack occurred when Deveraux had stopped at a lake while traveling to build fencing near the Finniss River. He noticed fish swimming in the lake and as he stepped away, the crocodile grabbed his right foot, pulling him into the water. Deveraux attempted to kick the crocodile in the ribs before biting it back. He managed to catch the crocodile's eyelid, causing it to release him. Deveraux then ran to his car and used a towel and rope to stop the bleeding before his brother drove him to the hospital. He credited his survival to accidentally catching the crocodile's eyelid. The incident has made him realize the need to change his habits and be more cautious. Crocodiles in the Northern Territory are protected by law and are an important industry and tourist attraction. The most recent fatal crocodile attack occurred in April this year in Queensland.
