Amazon has officially partnered with the creators of Warhammer 40,000 to bring the popular characters and stories to the big screen. As part of the deal, British actor Henry Cavill, known for his role as Superman, will serve as an executive producer and will also appear in the project. Warhammer 40,000 is a tabletop game that simulates battles between armies of miniature painted models. Through this agreement, Amazon has acquired the rights to hire talent and develop film and TV projects based on the Warhammer franchise. Games Workshop, the company behind Warhammer, expressed excitement about the collaboration and stated that they are now focused on working out the creative details, such as deciding which stories to bring to life first - through a movie or a TV show, or both. Amazon, known for successful franchises like Game of Thrones, has experienced continued success during the pandemic, with sales of Warhammer figurines surging. This partnership has resulted in an increase in the company's shares. Discussions between Games Workshop and Amazon began a year ago, leading to this significant announcement. To bring the Warhammer universe to the screen, a team of screenwriters is currently being assembled. Games Workshop, which began its journey in 1978, has built a massive fan base over the years. Collectors invest in building large forces of miniature plastic gaming models, with some models costing over £100 each. These models consist of hundreds of pieces that must be assembled and painted meticulously. Warhammer is played by millions around the world, and the fantasy tabletop gaming sector it is a part of is valued at around £8.6 billion. Kickstarter and similar platforms provide opportunities for new entrants in the gaming market to raise funds from enthusiasts. In addition to Warhammer 40,000, the agreement allows Amazon the option to obtain licensing rights for other Warhammer franchises in the future. Games Workshop and Amazon will spend the next twelve months collaborating on "creative guidelines" for the production of the films and series. Only once these guidelines are agreed upon will the production proceed.
