A Democratic lawmaker named Al Green from Texas made a surprising appearance on the House floor to vote against the impeachment of the homeland security secretary, even though he had just left the hospital after undergoing abdominal surgery. Green, who is 76 years old, was transported to the Capitol in a wheelchair and wearing hospital scrubs. House Republicans tried and failed to impeach Alejandro Mayorkas, blaming him for the surge of illegal immigration at the US border. Green consulted his doctors before leaving the hospital and was accompanied by Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. After arriving at the Capitol, he was checked by a physician. Green admitted in an interview from his hospital bed that he did not anticipate the vote being so close but was determined to cast his vote. Despite being in the hospital, he believed it was important to stand up for his principles. Green has been a House representative for the 9th district of Texas since 2005 and holds a favorable opinion of Mayorkas. The impeachment proceedings were initiated by Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, who revealed that she would try again. She accused Democrats of intentionally hiding Green's participation in the vote until the last minute, which she saw as a tactic to confuse Republicans. Three Republican members voted against the impeachment, and a fourth, Blake Moore of Utah, changed his vote as a procedural move. Green denied any wrongdoing and expressed relief in being able to focus on his health now.
