AI has been named the "word of the year" by Collins Dictionary due to the increasing discussions around its potential for good or destruction. The term's usage has quadrupled this year, according to the publisher. Collins managing director, Alex Beecroft, explained that AI has become a major focus in 2023 and has become as integrated into our lives as everyday technologies like email and streaming. The selection reflects the significant impact of artificial intelligence on our rapidly evolving world. The announcement coincided with a summit hosted by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, where world leaders and experts discussed how to maximize AI's benefits while mitigating the associated risks. In a different context, the Beatles have used AI to recover John Lennon's vocals from an old cassette and create their "last song," set for release soon. On the other hand, Sir Cliff Richard mistakenly referred to AI as "artificial insemination" in a BBC interview. The word of the year typically reflects the prevailing concerns of that time, such as permacrisis in 2022 and NFTs in 2021.
