Burna Boy, the Nigerian megastar, has experienced a phenomenal year. He achieved a historical feat by becoming the first African musician to headline sold-out stadium shows in both the US and the UK. Additionally, his latest album, I Told Them..., reached the top 10 on charts worldwide. However, Burna Boy's mother, Bose Ogulu, who also manages the Afrobeats singer, believes that he has not yet reached his full potential. While she admires his diligence and hard work, she considers him a work in progress. In an interview with the BBC's Nyasha Michelle, Ogulu stated, "There are many more milestones to attain. We need to not just step down and look at what we've done, but keep doing more." Known affectionately as Mama Burna by fans, Ogulu is often compared to Kris Jenner, the matriarch of the Kardashian family, for her motherly management skills. She learned the trade from her own father, who managed the late Nigerian icon Fela Kuti. With her successful career as a businesswoman and linguist, Ogulu understands the power of languages and culture. To manage Burna Boy, Ogulu had to step away from her language school, a decision she made with confidence. She had recognized his potential from a young age and witnessed his talents in the studio and in his high school band. They even established a system where she would provide studio time in exchange for good grades. However, she was taken aback when Burna Boy decided to drop out of university to pursue his music career. Ogulu hoped he would finish his degree, but he insisted on doing it his own way. Together with his father and her own father, they informed him of the consequences, but he was willing to take the risk. Ultimately, it paid off as Burna Boy went on to win a Grammy and tour the world with his music. Looking ahead, both mother and son have lofty goals. Ogulu expressed her desire to take their stadium shows from four to ten, emphasizing that there is always a higher level to strive for. Their focus remains on reaching new milestones and pushing the boundaries of their achievements.
