Afghanistan has experienced a second major earthquake shortly after a 6.3 magnitude quake caused over 1,000 deaths in the same area. The new quake, with the same magnitude, occurred at approximately 05:10 local time (00:40 GMT) on Tuesday. The epicenter is located 28km (17 miles) north of Herat city. The full impact of this latest earthquake is currently unknown, but many people are forced to sleep outdoors as their homes were destroyed in the previous quake on Saturday. In addition, there is a shortage of essential items such as blankets, food, and other supplies. The initial earthquake on Saturday struck Zindajan, a rural district around 40km (25 miles) from Herat city. Distressing images from the affected villages depict entire houses, which were too fragile to withstand such an earthquake, reduced to rubble. Afghanistan frequently experiences earthquakes, particularly within the Hindu Kush mountain range, as it sits near the convergence of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
